Everyone knows that Athens is a musical mecca, but things were rocking around here long before R.E.M. and the B-52’s put the Classic City on the map. Now’s your chance to learn about the beginnings of the Athens music scene at “Athens Rockin’ Roots Revisited: Reflections on the Athens Music Scene of the 60s and 70s.” This free event takes place at The Melting Point, 295 E. Dougherty Street in downtown Athens, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7. It will feature a meet and greet, a discussion panel, jam session and performances by the Athens Voices of Truth Community Choir and the Dodd Ferrelle Band. Learn about Athens musical heritage at “Athens Rockin’ Roots Revisited,” Oct. 7 Everyone knows that Athens is a musical mecca, but things were rocking around here long before R.E.M. and the B-52’s put the Classic City on the map. “Athens Rockin' Roots Revisited is designed to help people share their memories with family and friends,” said Project Director and Athens-Clarke County Library Director Kathryn Ames. “It is also a great way for newcomers to Athens to learn about some of their adopted community's history.” Among the musicians on the panel are David Blackmon, founding member of Blueground Undergrass, a veteran of the Normaltown Flyers and Widespread Panic; Brian Burke, leader of Normaltown Flyers, a beloved straight-ahead country-pop band; Donny Whitehead of the tremendously popular Jesters; Kemp Jones, an Athens musician whose band Silent Partner played up and down the East coast in colleges and coffee houses; and moderator John Straw, bass player with the Acme Blues Band and T. Graham Brown. The Athens-Clarke County Library and Lyndon House Arts Center have partnered to present this event as part of “The Boomers: Reflecting, Sharing, Learning” program. “The Boomers: Reflecting, Sharing, Learning” is funded by a three-year leadership grant by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services in order to reach out to baby boomers and increase access to lifelong learning opportunities. Baby boomers are people who were born between 1946 and 1964. “Athens Rockin’ Roots Revisited” is the second of three annual community events. Last fall, the program invited the community to Lyndon House Arts Center for “Mystique of the Automobile: A Festival of Cars, Art and Fashion.” “Athens Rockin’ Roots Revisited” is free and open to everyone, but tickets are required due to limited seating. Pick up your free tickets at the Athens-Clarke County Library, 2025 Baxter Street, Athens, or Lyndon House Arts Center, 293 Hoyt Street, Athens, starting on Friday, Sept. 14. Limit four tickets per person.
