2013 One Health Symposium: Breaking Barriers and Crossing ScalesMarch 21-23, 2013The University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education and Conference Center, Athens, GA 30602www.onehealth.uga.eduAboutWhat is One Health? The interconnection of human, animal, and environmental health has been recognized for centuries, but the increased complexity of the modern world was unimaginable 50 years ago. The stakes are now much higher and the volatility of the situation has been boosted tremendously. The interrelationship among animals, humans, and the environment are intimate, significant and far-reaching; studying them effectively requires a somewhat novel approach. This multidisciplinary approach to studying and understanding health issues at the nexus of human, animal, and environmental health is today called “One Health.” One Health not only encourages interdisciplinary collaborations, but constitutes a departure from the current emphasis on the clinical care of individual human and veterinary patients to one of disease prevention and health promotion at a meta-ecosystem level.Purpose: This three-day event will bring together national and international disease ecology experts with the purpose of sharing the latest research at the nexus of human, animal and environmental health. Who should attend?: Those interested in One Health, microbiology, infectious diseases, disease ecology, human and veterinary medicine, environmental health, public health, health policy, wildlife and for any in the forefront of disease diagnosis and health practice.Symposium session topics: MicrobiomeMicrobe-Host InteractionsBiodiversity and InfectionRegistration: Registration is available at the UGA Division of One Health website: onehealth.uga.edu.Call for Abstracts: Abstracts are being accepted for poster presentations.
